Nina Elizabeth (Betty) Thomas Lawrence, 94, died Monday, January 8, 2018, at Spring Harbor in Columbus, GA.
A private burial will take place prior to a memorial service at The First Presbyterian Church, Thursday, January 11, 2018, at 4:00 pm with the Reverend Joel Alvis officiating. A reception will be held at the Church following the service.

Betty was born September 12, 1923 in Columbus, Georgia, daughter of John Robert Thomas and Lois Elizabeth McCroan Thomas. She grew up in Columbus where she attended Wynnton School and Columbus High School. After graduating from high school she worked at several businesses in Columbus including the local draft board prior to marrying George Lawrence on January 19, 1942. She remained in Columbus during the war years and when George returned from serving in the South Pacific, they lived in Columbus for two years before moving to New York City. She obtained the position of assistant to the managing director of Financial Executive Institute, New York, New York, a membership organization dedicated to financial officers of corporations, mainly presidents, vice presidents of finance and controllers. She remained there for several years until she was recruited by Canny, Bowen, Inc. one of the 10 top executives recruiting firms in the country, where she held the position of research director. She attended Pace University, in New York City, in the evenings, where she received a BS Degree in Business.
After her husband was transferred by IBM to Charlotte, North Carolina, she joined the First Union Corporation, working there until her husband retired and they moved to Columbus.
Betty devoted her time to volunteering for various community activities. She was a docent for the Columbus Museum, served on the Board of the Columbus Women's Symphony Organization, she was the founding member and first president of the Green Island Garden Club, a member of Phalo Study Club, active in the Garden Club of Georgia, Elder at First Presbyterian Church, and moderator of a circle at First Presbyterian Church.
She is predeceased by her parents, an infant brother, Eugene Thomas and her brother John Robert (Bob) Thomas of Cottageville, SC. She is survived by her loving husband of 75 years, George Lawrence, sister, Eleanor Thomas Burnham of Columbus, sister, Eugenia Thomas Seay (Will) of Troy, MO, nieces Nancy Burnham Stephens (Larry) of Columbus, Toni Thomas Schluter (Robert) of Cottageville, SC., and nephews, John Robert Thomas V (Cindy) of Cottageville, SC, Mitchell Warren Thomas (Penny), Cottageville, SC, Gregg Seay (Karen) of Troy, MO., Keith Seay (Sue) of St. Peters, MO. And several other great nieces and great nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to The First Presbyterian Church, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra or the Garden Club of Georgia.
