"We share the passing of our beautiful grandmother, Helen Inez Barton, of Phenix City, Alabama. The angels carried her home on September 4, 2017, in peaceful repose at the age of 100, in Cumming, Georgia.
Helen was born in Columbus, Georgia on August 22, 1917, the daughter of Thomas and Emily Boyd McManus, where she lived most of her life. She worked in the cotton mills as a young woman and later at a dry cleaners. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker who raised her 3 children and several grandchildren.
We remember how she loved and inspired us with her grit and witty character, her simple grace and meticulous style. We remember her clarity of mind and unwavering purpose. We remember her loyalty and devotion to family. We remember her sweet and gentle smile that made everything alright. And no one could make fried chicken like Inez. Grandma loved to cook! She leaves us with many cherished memories to fill our hearts and minds. She enjoyed puzzles, crocheting, quilting, and spending time with her family and friends. She was a long time member of Trinity Temple Assembly of God Church. Helen is preceded in death by her parents, her late husband, Melvin Barton, her two sons, Jerry and Roger Peoples and her daughter, Jo Ann Casto; all her brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her children, Charles Barton and Carolyn McDermott; her grandsons: Michael Peoples, Danny Wyatt, Chris Barton, Brian Grenz; granddaughters: Linda Hubert, Carol Parente, Dawn Winterrowd, Susan Mickey Peoples-Click, Cindee Sassaman, Kelly McDaniel, Kila Gurule, and her many great grandchildren, relatives and friends whom she loved and adored.
Funeral services for Helen will be held in the Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, GA, 31907. The family will be welcoming and visiting with guests 2pm-3pm. Friday, September 8, 2017. Services, officiated by Rev Michael McBride, will begin at 3pm.
