Obituary


Pierce "Bob" Burns, 94, of Columbus, GA, died October 21, 2012 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home.

A chapel service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, October 25, 2012 in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, GA, 31907, with Reverend Norman Dunlap officiating. Interment will follow at 3:00 PM in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, 5755 Mallory Road, College Park, GA, 30349. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Burns was born October 8, 1918 in Vidalia, GA, son of the late John and Nettie Phillips Burns. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a POW. Mr. Burns was awarded numerous awards and commendations which include The Purple Heart and The Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters. Mr. Burns worked and retired after many years of service as Vice President of Sales with Oxford Industries. He was a Gideon, member of the East Point Masonic Lodge, # 288, past president of the Men and Boys Apparel Club, and a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church. Mr. Burns also served with the Evangelistic Explosion in Florida, and the Prison Ministry in Newnan, GA.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Burns was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha W. Burns; one grandson, Michael Webb;
two brothers, Phillip Burns and Julius J. Burns.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Betty West Shelton Burns of Columbus, GA; two daughters, Barbara "Bee Bee" Hilliard (Barry), and Belinda Wilkie (Johnny); four grandchildren, Ben Hilliard, Brandon Hilliard, Lamar Wilkie, and Donna Larhrissi; nine great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Clem Burns and Herbert Burns.
